GPT-6 Astra

LLM

GPT-6 Astra is OpenAI's agentic model, built to carry a task to completion rather than answer and wait. It runs long, multi-step work across tools, browsers and codebases, delegates to subagents, and asks questions without stopping. It rewards a different kind of prompt: a clear outcome, an explicit autonomy policy, and a stop condition.

How to use GPT-6 Astra

Available inside ChatGPT and through the OpenAI API. Write briefs, not chats: state the outcome, the source of truth, the constraints, what it may decide alone, what needs approval, and what proves the task is done. For computer-use tasks, ask for a plan and a cost estimate before execution.

Best for

Long agentic runs across files, browsers and CRMs. Research briefs with explicit source authority. Codebase work that should finish without hand-holding. Delegated, parallel workstreams.

How it behaves

Biases toward action. Given a brief, it infers scope, keeps working through non-critical ambiguity, and only pauses when a missing answer would materially change the result. It defaults to heavy Markdown and lists unless told to write prose, and it over-tests small changes unless told not to.

Tips

Give it a stop condition or it keeps researching. Tell it to write in paragraphs and ban slop words, or it lists everything. Gate irreversible actions with an explicit approval step and let everything reversible run. Put the authoritative document first and say it is authoritative.

Pricing

Available inside ChatGPT paid plans and through the OpenAI API at per-token rates. See the OpenAI pricing page for the current plan that includes Astra.
